Are you the homeowner?

Installers need the property owner's go-ahead before work can start.

What a boiler installation actually involves

A straight replacement in the same position is usually a one day job for one engineer. Moving the boiler, or changing the type of system, takes longer and costs more, because the pipework has to change with it.

Knowing which of these you are asking for is the difference between quotes you can compare and quotes you cannot.

Like-for-like replacement

Same type of boiler, same place on the wall. The simplest version of the job and the easiest to compare between installers.

Moving the boiler

Kitchen to loft, or cupboard to utility. Adds gas, water and condensate pipework, plus making good afterwards.

Converting to a combi

Removing the cylinder and tanks and running the system from one appliance. Usually two engineers and two to three days.

First time central heating

A full system with radiators and pipework throughout. Priced per property rather than off a list.

What should be in the quote

The appliance is only part of what you are paying for. A quote worth comparing names the boiler make, model and output in kW, the flue, the controls, the system filter, how the system will be cleaned, the labour, and the warranty length.

Two quotes that look hundreds of pounds apart are often quoting different work rather than different value. Our guide on how to compare boiler quotes goes through the checks line by line.

Getting the size right

Output is worked out from the property, not the old boiler. Bedrooms, bathrooms and the number of radiators all feed into it, and an installer who quotes without asking about any of them has guessed.

Oversizing is the more common mistake and it costs you twice, once on the appliance and again on running it. An installer who measures up properly is worth more than one who is quick.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a boiler installation take?

A like-for-like swap in the same position is typically one day with one engineer. Moving the boiler usually runs to a day and a half or two, and converting a conventional system to a combi commonly takes two engineers two to three days.

Are the installers Gas Safe registered?

Yes. Anyone working on a gas boiler in the UK must be on the Gas Safe Register by law, and you can check any installer's registration number on the Gas Safe Register website before they start work.

Do I have to pay for the quotes?

No. Getting matched and receiving quotes is free, and there is no obligation to go ahead with any of them.

Who notifies Building Control and registers the warranty?

Both are the installer's responsibility, not yours. Ask each one to confirm they will do it, and keep the paperwork they send you afterwards, because a warranty claim usually depends on it.

What size boiler do I need?

It depends on the number of bedrooms, bathrooms and radiators rather than on what is currently fitted. An installer should ask about all three before quoting an output.

Can I spread the cost?

Some installers offer finance and some do not, so it is worth asking when you compare. Check the total repayable and the APR rather than only the monthly figure.
